Though Sept. 11 was a tremendous event for America in 2001,there are many other important events that occured. In 2001 George W. Bush was elected President and Dick Cheney became vice president as we entered into yet another Recession. Recession. The 2001 recession began in march and lasted 8 months. The reccession continued to spread across the U.S. then began to grow again. The National Burea of Economic Research's BUsinees Cycle Dating Committee reported that "the down Turn was "slightly less than average for recessions" in post World War II period" (USA today). In translation this recession was not as long or devistating as others though the unemployment rate continued to grow after the end of the recession. Our economy continued to grow for some time and Bush put alot of the nations money into defense spending after the attacks of Sept. 11. Bush announces withdraw from ABM treaty. After Sept. 11 there was a wide ranging criminal investigation on the terrorists responsible. The United States Government believed Osama bin Laden of the al Qaeda was responsible. Bush created the Offece of Homeland security and soon the U.S. and Great Britian entered into a bombing compaign against Iraq. Deespite objections from Russia Bush announced America's withdrawl from the 1972 Anti Ballistic Missle agreement. The president conveyed his opinion that "" I have concluded the ABM treaty hinders our governments ability to develop ways to protect our people from future terrorists or rogue state missle attacks"" (Knox). Test of the Missle Defense Shield. With the wounds of the attacks on the Pentagon still fresh the U.S. began testing Missile defense shields. The Pentagons Missle Defense Agency shot down a dummy missle ober the South Pacific. The interceptor missle was fired from Kauai Island, Hawii. The dummy missle was launched from a U.S. mobile platform in the Pacific in a mock attack. The ground based system in Kauai was designed to protect the U.S. from short to intermidiate missles. Also Said to be in the defense of the U.S. was the opening of Guantanamo bay to hold terrorist prisoners. Guantanamo. Located on the SOutheastern end of cuba Guantanamo was the former cite of a U.S. Naval base that covers approximatley 45 square miles. The base was established in 1898 when the United states assumed control of Cuba. In 2001 it was transformed into a prison camp. It housed a small group of detention camps the Delta, Echo, and Iguana.
